One week down, a million more to go…

September 29th, 2007 | Uncategorized

I'm so freaking bored. I've only been unemployed for a WEEK. Sigh. . .I'm still waiting for the volunteer stuff to line up correctly and that should be this week. I visit the therapeutic riding center on Monday. The nursing home volunteer director, however, may be awhile. This is awfully sad, but it turns out that her mother is in the nursing home right now. . .and apparently NOT doing well. :( Here I was, getting all frustrated because I had not heard back from her yet.

I've unfortunately fallen into another bad habit — sleeping in. Not terribly late, but my goal was to get up at the same time every day.

And I'm getting discouraged, un-confident, about the OT program. Why? Because I have too much time to think. The advisor was very adament about how competitive it is to get in and that the essays were the big ticket in. ARGH. What if I can't write 2-3 stellar essays?? I want to blow their socks off, because, well, mainly, I haven't gotten my prereq courses done. Those won't be complete until next Spring. And the deadline for application to OT program next FALL is Feb. 1, 2008.

I'm really should take the time and start writing those essays NOW while I have the time…I just need to get rid of this self-doubt problem I have…

I wonder what time the gym closes. . .

More blacks, Latinos in jail than in college dorms?

More blacks, Latinos in jail than college dorms

Civil rights advocates say Census Bureau figures are startling

WASHINGTON - More than three times as many black people live in prison cells as in college dorms, the government said in a report to be released Thursday.

The ratio is only slightly better for Hispanics, at 2.7 inmates for every Latino in college housing. Among non-Hispanic whites, more than twice as many live in college housing as in prison or jail.

The numbers, driven by men, do not include college students who live off campus. Previously released census data show that black and Hispanic college students — commuters and those in dorms — far outnumber black and Hispanic prison inmates.

Nevertheless, civil rights advocates said it is startling that blacks and Hispanics are more likely to live in prison cells than in college dorms.

“It’s one of the great social and economic tragedies of our time,” said Marc Morial, president and CEO of the Urban League. “It points to the signature failure in our education system and how we’ve been raising our children.”

The Census Bureau released 2006 data Thursday on the social, racial and economic characteristics of people living in adult correctional facilities, college housing and nursing homes. It is the first in-depth look at people living in “group quarters” since the 1980 census. It shows, for example, that nursing homes had much older residents in 2006 than in 1980.

Commuter students not included
The new data has limitations. In addition to not including commuter students, it does not provide racial breakdowns by gender or age, though it does show that males make up 90 percent of prison inmates.

Also, most prison inmates are 25 or older while 96 percent of people in college housing are age 18 to 24.

The data show that big increases in black and Hispanic inmates occurred since 1980. In 1980, the number of blacks living in college dorms was roughly equal to the number in prison. Among Hispanics, those in college dorms outnumbered those in prison in 1980.

There are a lot of reasons why black students do not reach college at the same rate as whites, said Amy Stuart Wells, a professor of sociology and education at Columbia University’s Teachers College.

Black students are more likely to attend segregated schools with high concentrations of poverty, less qualified teachers, lower expectations and a less demanding curriculum, she said.

“And they are perceived by society as terrible schools, so it is hard to get accepted into college,” Wells said. “Even if you are a high-achieving kid who beats the odds, you are less likely to have access to the kinds of courses that colleges are looking for.”

Students who don’t graduate high school are much more likely to go to prison, said Gary Orfield, co-director of the Civil Rights Project at UCLA. Nearly 40 percent of inmates lack a high school diploma or the equivalent, according to the census data.

“The criminal economy is one of the only alternatives in some of these places,” Orfield said. “You basically have the criminalization of a whole community, particularly in some inner cities.”

Further report details
Blacks made up 41 percent of the nation’s 2 million prison and jail inmates in 2006. Non-Hispanic whites made up 37 percent and Hispanics made up 19 percent.

Morial, who is a former mayor of New Orleans, said the political debate over high incarceration rates for minorities hasn’t yielded results. He said conservatives blame a lack of family values while liberals blame a lack of government programs, with neither side seeing the whole picture.

“We do, in the African-American community, need to instill a stronger value on education,” Morial said.

But, he added, minority students also need more early childhood education, longer school days, longer school years and more meaningful summer job opportunities.

“We need to get serious about true investment on the front end,” Morial said.

Among the other findings in the census data:

  • Men made up about 90 percent of prison and jail inmates in 2006, down from 94 percent in 1980.
  • About 9 percent of prison inmates were immigrants last year, up from about 4 percent in 1980. Immigrants made up about 13 percent of the total population in 2006.
  • Non-Hispanic whites made up about 73 percent of the 2.3 million people living in college housing in 2006. Blacks made up about 12 percent, Asians about 7 percent and Hispanics about 6 percent.

I'm just more surprised, than anything, that this article had this sort of title. Call me crazy.

I hate living in Michigan

September 27th, 2007 | Uncategorized

Ok, next week, I am supposed to start getting an unemployment check.  I'm pretty sure everything's already been cleared to make sure I get that. But our pathetic state legislative branch and governor are RETARDED.  They can't decide on a budget. They have had 8 months to create one for the new fiscal year, which begins this Monday, October 1.

They obviously didn't try hard enough. The governor will not give them a 30 day extension so that they can keep going. They have to resolve this by Sunday or the worst could happen for me and THOUSANDS of other Michigan citizens. The State Government will be shutting down. Sure, they'll keep the police and fire fighters going, but everything else? Pretty much crap.

I'm scared to death. The list of things that are being shut down is not being released until tomorrow.  However, the article says The Department of Labor has an unreleased “contingency plan” for unemployment checks.

I feel like crying.  This doesn't mean anything and it's likely that they checks may not get here.

Please keep me and others here in this state who are relying on this to get through. . .

Weight Update:

I can't find my measuring tape, so the only thing I can measure in is my weight! 136! Woot.  Wait. I forgot to tag the last weigh in. I have no idea if this is a good thing or not. Gotta search for two things. The measuring tape and that last entry. I'll get back to you on that.

EDITED:

Found the entry!!

I weighed in at 139…I've been going back and forth between 135 and 136 this whole week.

This is great!

Waist: 28.5
Hips: 40.75
Bust: No change

My one year plan!

September 25th, 2007 | Uncategorized

I've been meaning to give you a play by play on my plans for the next year, but things have been crazy and I wanted to make sure I had them right in my mind before I talked to you all about them.

  • No work for the rest of October and most of November
  • Will be volunteering at two places: as an activity assistant at a nursing home, and as a leadwalker at a therapeutic horse riding center (actually the volunteer ops are pending. . .I've called each place twice and heard nothing back yet — grrr…)
  • November 26th - Begin CNA course. Not that I've all that excited about being a nurses aide, but it will give me a little more medical experience, as well as get me a job with a much more flexible schedule. Heck, I'm all about going back to working second shift so I can make this work.
  • January - April 2008 - finish prereq courses for OT program: BIO 110 Anatomy and Physiology & PSY 160 Human Growth and Development
  • February 1 2008 - Application deadline for OT program (my goal is to get this at the beginning of the semester however, to get a leg in above the rest
  • Fall 2008 - Begin OT PROGRAM!!!
  • December 2010 - GRADUATE from the OT program

I still can't believe everything is falling into place so well. Even in my own mind. Usually, it takes me some time to work out all of the details.  But here I am typing out what needs to be done and what order they should be in. How crazy is it that I have put this altogether in. . .4 days??

my new career…back to school

September 25th, 2007 | Uncategorized

I went to visit the advisor at WMU for the Occupational Therapy program. This is definitely where I am meant to be. I was 100% comofrtable with the rep. And where she took me around for a tour of the OT areas. HOLY MOLY! I fit there. I belong there.  I now know that I am making the right choice. I am really making the right choice! For once in my life, while still scared, I am completely confident I'm doing the right thing. :)

my butt hurts :(

September 25th, 2007 | Uncategorized

Spinning bikes? Suck ass. Seriously. I have never gone to a spinning class at my gym, because I have no interest in them. I HATE riding bikes. They don't make the seats friendly. I have a big ass, skinny or not. . .I got a J.Lo. butt/hips combination happening. Seriously, does that bike in the picture even look comfortable?

So yeah, my butt starts getting sore almost immediately into the course. Seriously, I wasn't on it for 3 minutes when my pelvic or “sits” bones were aching. Now, I'm as home, just happy to have a very cushy couch.  The roommate is nuts for thinking we can go again in a couple of days. Screw that.

The instructor says that a gel seat cover would be very effective. Please lady, I'm unemployed. I can barely afford the gym membership at the moment. . .

- - -

And I just realized it was midnight.

The roommate talked me into picking up yarn and knitting needles. So I did. And from 8:30 - 11:30 tonight I knitted. Woot. . .I'm trying to knit a scarf. I have NEVER knit before, so it's kind of cool. Except that I just wasted 3 hours of my time knitting. Very slow. :)

More on my first day unemployed later. I'm exhausted. I could have slept in, but guess who was good today and got up before 8? Lol. . .Not tomorrow. I don't have an appointment happening until 10am in the morning. :)
